This is one of the best beaches in Santa Barbara. Its also one of the least visited as you have to walk for 15 min to get there. Not sure about you but I would walk for a few days to get this view.

I never had so much fun down on East Beach. The early bird gets the worm as they say. I was out here(with the birds) from sunrise till around 10am every day for 4 days. Even though it was cold, there was no wind until I was leaving. It was crisp and clear and nearly the same every morning.

This little building kinda sums up Santa Barbara archeticture for me. Its also a nice place to take a break in the afternoon while walking around. The bench in the shade faces a nice view of the mountains.

Notes:

I made this painting for a commission and I really had a great time with it. First I painted 2 studies on 2 separate days right at the same time. After I decided on the main color scheme and the positioning of the forms I brought the big canvas out on location. Its a challenge doing such a large canvas outside rather then in the studio. Its hard just to see around the canvas to see your subject. I was out there for 3 days straight for about 4 hours each day. Then I put a bunch of studio time in working with the color relationships and adding detail.

Notes from 2009:

This is by far the largest painting I have completed at night, on location. I think it ended up taking me 7 nights from 9:30 pm to about 1:00 am. It was a surreal experience being outside in the city at night for that length of time. There where so many wierd things that would happen and very intersting folk wandering around. You can see what time I finished it on that last night.
